Kwanzaa bardzo różni się od tradycyjnych festiwali wprowadzonych wcześniej. Festiwal ten ma stosunkowo krótką historię, ma niespełna 60 lat i został założony w 1966 roku przez afrykańską-amerykańską uczoną i aktywistkę społeczną Maulanę Karengę (Maulana Karenga).
Zanim festiwal powstał w 1965 roku, w Los Angeles w USA miały miejsce Waltz Riots (Watt Riots). Z grubsza wydarzyło się to, że biały policjant aresztował czarnoskórego młodzieńca prowadzącego samochód po pijanemu. Z powodu brutalnego problemu z egzekwowaniem prawa, mieszkańcy dzielnicy Waltz w Los Angeles (głównie czarni i Latynosi) byli niezadowoleni i seria zamieszek trwała nadal. Sześć dni. To jest tło dla narodzin Kwanzaa.
After the Waltz riots, Kalenga decided to create a festival of their own for African Americans and independent of mainstream American culture. Thus, Kalunga founded Kwanzaa in accordance with the harvest festival celebration tradition of African culture. The name Kwanzaa is derived from the African Swahili "Matuda Ya Kwanza", which means "the first fruit". Karenga added an extra a to the word Kwanza, adding seven letters to the word, which corresponded to the seven days of Kwanzaa.
When Kwanzaa was founded, Kalunga's original intention was to provide African Americans with a grand festival that would replace Christmas, because he felt that Christian culture belonged to white people. But as more and more people celebrated Kwanzaa, Kalunga adjusted his position and believed that Kwanzaa was not opposed to white culture, but was a supplement to the existing festival. Therefore, while celebrating mainstream festivals, people can also celebrate Kwanzaa.
